How To Choose an Electrical Contractor

In Ontario, all Electrical Contractors must be licensed and display their ESA/ECRA credentials on all company correspondence, advertising and all vehicles. We recommend that you should consider all these factors.

Are they focused on “Residential Retrofits” ? This is not the same as new construction residential. We recommend you ask their “Specialty” first.

Do they understand it is your Home, and not just another jobsite? Do they protect your floors and clean up at the commencement of each day?

Do they take responsibility for repairs to walls, ceiling and other surface as a result of the scope of work?

Do they have sufficient manpower to be focused on your job? Or do they spend most of their time on the cell phone apologizing to/juggling you and other customers?

Do they sub-contract their work to others ignoring the quality of Workmanship and the finished product?

Do they actually have a place of business to answer the phone, support the employees in the field, and provide suitable training for them?

Are they in business for at least 10 years? Or do they just claim to be? Check for these answers at our “BBB” page.

Do they spend time at a free quotation to clearly understand the scope of work and state in writing when promised? Do they offer several past customer references?

What is their record or status at “BBB”(Better Business Bureau) or “Homestars”, or are they even listed.

Are they members of the “OEL”(Ontario Electrical League) or “ACP”(Authorized Contractor Program)?

Do they have a diligent group of professionals dedicated to your job only? Or, do they subcontract their work to others, ignoring quality assurance?

Do they have a Health and Safety policy? Many Residential Retrofit companies are too small to be required by law to have a Health and Safety policy. Do they at least provide WSIB coverage for their employees? (By law they must).

Do they spend the time upon completion to walk through the job to ensure total customer satisfaction? Or do they simply presume everything is to standards until a complaint is lodged.
